º£½ÇÒùĸÂÒÂ× prominent in University Alliance moves to boost inclusion within research and innovation talent pipeline

A new publication by the University Alliance (UA) highlights efforts to improve diversity and inclusion across higher education research programmes.

10 March 2021

Launched in the same week as International Women’s Day and British Science Week, the has been developed following a roundtable between UA’s Research and Innovation Network and Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, CEO of UK Research and Innovation. The document provides examples of how Alliance universities are working to bolster under-represented groups in the R&D talent stream via initiatives such as new student scholarships for BAME candidates.

Other key factors identified to bring about necessary change include a need for intervention to develop a broad range of talent among Early Career Researchers. º£½ÇÒùĸÂÒÂ× has led the way with initiatives such as university-wide Early Career Researcher ambassadors who are able to help identify areas where improvement in diversity and inclusion are required, and find ways to overcome obstacles to that being achieved.

Professor Tara Dean

University Alliance Research and Innovation network chair and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise at the º£½ÇÒùĸÂÒÂ× Professor Tara Dean said:

“As Chair of the University Alliance Research and Innovation network, I am constantly amazed by the breadth and scale of impact being delivered by the research undertaken by our universities. I’m pleased that we can showcase just some a snapshot of it through this report.

This year’s British Science Week calls for action to support the next generation of scientists, and I’m proud that in University Alliance we have a deep rooted commitment to unlocking potential and effecting change, particularly within our academic pipeline. As this publication highlights, both within our institutions and across the Alliance, we are leading initiatives to support Early Career Researchers, and expand the diversity of R&D talent pipelines.

Our universities are committed to taking action to progress equality, diversity and inclusion across our research programmes, our institutions, and in wider society, but we also recognise that we have a long way to go to truly realise this ambition. In the coming weeks, months and years, I look forward to working with my colleagues across the Alliance on driving through long-term strategic, cultural and organisational change.”
